Crackers and Biscuits

Nice find by Carl - jump over to Hoxsie! and check out the (1860's?) ad for Greenbush Steam Cracker and Biscuit Manufactory.

So what were all those mysterious crackers? The Complete Bread, Cake, and Cracker Baker, J. Thompson Gill, 1881, devotes a full page just to the confusion between crackers and biscuits, before moving on to crumpets and jumbles.

For some more insight into Greenbush in this era, check out this Troy Record article from October 21, 2010: "You could look it up back in 1868".

Summer Storms

Waiting out the summer storm at Angie B's [check out their recent Albany Eats! Review], while my car got a NYS Inspection at Old Tyme Auto. (Good excuse for an ice cream cone.)

Hiring in Rensselaer

I'm still seeing regular employment ads for Rensselaer, NY jobs during my news searches. To see who's hiring, here are a variety of Rensselaer job searches:

Lunch on Broadway

I'm working from home for a few weeks, so I finally get to check out some local flavor. Lunch in Rensselaer today:

P.J.'s Cafe, (full breakfast, sandwiches, and grill)
212 Broadway, Rensselaer, entrance & parking off Academy St.
Open Mon-Fri, 7am-2pm
Fax/Call Ahead and Delivery available

The "Commander" sounded great (a spiced pulled chicken sandwich for $5.75), but they had just sold out. The pulled pork sandwich was excellent though. P.J.'s is the place to find business cards for every service in town - they post three bulletin boards of them.

Old School Bakery & Deli (fresh baked goods, subs, sandwiches, breakfast sandwiches)
263 Broadway, Rensselaer, at the intersection of 3rd Ave., and well hidden behind a large tree
Fax/Call Ahead, Delivery and Catering available

I didn't catch their hours, and they're not listed on the takeout menu, but they said they will be open on Saturday for River Day (P.J.'s probably won't be, unless my description of the potential crowd was persuasive.)

Old School does lunches, but I was looking for fresh-baked carbs - I'll definitely be back for more of these Radio Bars. Turns out that you can rationalize a lot of calories by saying "I'll blog about it".

GE Healthcare Opens Plant

UPDATE - Daily Gazette: GE unveils $165M X-ray factory [longer article]
NORTH GREENBUSH — General Electric’s digital makeover of technology that helps doctors detect and diagnose smaller tumors made its debut Friday, with a new digital X-ray factory in Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s Tech Park.

The Business Review:
GE Healthcare opens $165M N. G’Bush plant
GE Healthcare officially opened its $165 million mammography production facility in the Rensselaer Technology Park today.

The Record: Jobs on the way [photos]
General Electric opened its $165 million digital mammography production facility Friday, that will create some 150 manufacturing jobs.

The new 130,000-square-foot facility in the Rensselaer Technology Park includes a 60,000-square-foot “clean room” and will have a payroll of some $10 million.

Times Union, The Buzz: Business News: GE Healthcare opens $165M Rensselaer County facility
Last month, GE Chairman and CEO Jeffrey Immelt was at the laboratory to announce plans to build a $100 million battery plant in the Capital Region that will employ 350 people.
...
A site for the battery plant hasn’t yet been announced, but state Sen. Roy McDonald pointed to vacant land across from the new X-ray plant and suggested to the crowd that GE put it “right there.”

MetLife's Data Center

Data storage is critical for an insurance company, and MetLife has their data center right here in the Rensselaer Tech Park. MetLife's IT gurus recently made news by significantly improving their data backup and recovery strategy.

SearchCIO.com: Disaster recovery strategy shift reduces data loss, recovery time
Under pressure to improve recovery time objectives and minimize data loss, IT veterans at MetLife Inc. took advantage of decreasing storage costs and an underleveraged data center to devise a multimillion-dollar disaster recovery strategy that met those goals, eliminated a security risk and will earn a double-digit ROI in five years.
MetLife previously backed up the mainframe onto data tapes, which were stored off-site. In the event of a major system failure, as much as 41 hours of data could potentially be lost, depending on the time of the last tape backup. MetLife turned their Scranton, PA data center into a mirror image backup site for Rensselaer, greatly improving recovery times and reducing potential data loss to 15 minutes. (They had to install an ultra-high-speed optical network line between the two centers to achieve this.)

Press Coverage - Polsinello Fuels

Here's a nice business profile of Polsinello Fuels [241 Riverside Ave, Rensselaer, NY] from Sunday's paper:

Times-Union: Taking the long view
An established business grows by embracing new technologies

Louis Polsinello Sr. started Polsinello Fuels out of his parents' house while still in high school. The year was 1952, and oil was replacing coal as the preferred means of heating homes. ... It's 57 years later, and not much has changed. Polsinello Fuels in Rensselaer still installs and services heating systems, still delivers oil and gasoline, and still looks for every opportunity to expand and to embrace new technology.
...
"They really believe in making homes more energy-efficient and saving the earth," said Kara Faraone, marketing coordinator for Conservation Services Group of Albany, which works on behalf of the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority's Energy Star home-heating loan program. "They have gone above and beyond what most contractors in New York state have done."

Riverside Diner

My folks came through town tonight and we finally had the chance to check out the Riverside Diner [314 Columbia St Rensselaer, NY]. They feature "All Homecooked" and "Breakfast All Day".

On a Tuesday evening there were plenty of tables available. In fact, everyone there seemed to be a "Regular" - we felt rather conspicuous, as if we'd walked into somebody else's church social.

We had a good diner-type meal in under an hour, and the prices were reasonable. It passed my "good bread" test - warm, crispy dinner rolls, sliced and grilled - a nice touch. I'm sure we'll go back.

MWK Biogas

I noticed a press release which fits well with the other "energy" postings of the past week. MWK Biogas North America Corp. of Rensselaer is the US branch of a German company. They market "digester" systems which harvest biogas from manure and other organic feedstocks, generating electricity and heat via anaerobic fermentation.

Their technology is said to produce 1.2-1.3 kW per cow. According to a recent article about a proposed greenhouse gas tax on farm animals, New York State has about 627,000 dairy cows. That's a lot of energy waiting to be captured - about 750-800 megawatts. For comparison, Maple Ridge Wind Farm in Lowville produces 320 MW of electricity with 195 turbines, which they claim is enough to power 160,000 average New York homes.

The article Farm Digesters For Small Dairies In Vermont tells how "Cow Power" provides renewable energy from dairy farm "output", as well as from other organic waste like whey from the Ben & Jerry's ice cream factory.

Pumpkins & Mums

Tons of pumpkins at Gold Krest Farm, just south of the city on Rt. 9J [3447 River Rd.].

You might meet Reilly there - she's a very sweet puppy with a crinkly face. She didn't come out for a photo - you'll just have to see her in person.
